Hollywood writers and actors have been on strike for over a week. Economists are warning that the shutdown could cost the US billions of dollars. The previous writers' strike in 2007 wiped $2 billion off Los Angeles' economy alone. The Writers Guild of America could call a work stoppage as early as Tuesday if it cannot reach a deal with companies such as Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) and Netflix Inc (NFLX.O). Writers say they have suffered financially during the streaming TV boom, in part due to shorter seasons and smaller residual payments. Half of TV series writers now work at minimum salary levels, compared with one-third in the 2013-14 season, according to Guild statistics. The WGA wants safeguards to prevent studios from using AI to generate new scripts from writers' previous work.

Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" song is being used as part of a recent TikTok trend where people juxtapose how celebrities look now with how they looked earlier in their careers. The “Young and Beautiful” controversy comes on the heels of other ageist and fatphobic memes and trends. A recent viral tweet proclaimed that singer and actor Miley Cyrus is “loved by God” because of her youthful appearance at age 30. It’s unclear if the tweet was earnest or in jest, but many replied saying that age 30 isn’t old. It is unclear when the "Young and Beautiful” trend started.

In 2019, Martin Scorsese said that Marvel movies were “not cinema” and worried cinema was being “invaded” by them. As it happens, I’m not a fan of Marvel films either. For almost the entire history of movies, women haven’t had access to the capital required to make them. There were at least 15 women directors in the commercial film industry during that time. That’s dismal but more than twice as high as the number of female film directors of the same era.
